San Juan se sitúa en el centro oeste de la República Argentina. Posee una población de 818.234 habitantes (Censo 2022). Con una geografía extensa, tiene una superficie de 89.651 kilómetros cuadrados divididos en 19 departamentos, que abarca desde fértiles valles hasta la aridez del desierto, incluyendo algunos de los cerros más altos de la cordillera de los Andes.

San Juan is located in the center west of Argentina. It has a population of 818,234 inhabitants (2022 Census). With an extensive geography, it has an area of 89,651 square kilometers administratively divided into 19 Departments, ranging from fertile valleys to arid deserts, presenting some of the highest peaks of the Andes mountain range.

En San Juan, prima un relieve montañoso intercalado por valles bajo un clima templado seco, con días soleados prácticamente todo el año. Las amplitudes térmicas son grandes dentro del clima semiárido de montaña que caracteriza la zona. Otra característica es el viento Zonda, el cual es un viento cálido, seco y llega desde el oeste, que generalmente se da en las temporadas de otoño y primavera.

In San Juan, a mountainous relief interspersed by valleys prevails under a dry temperate climate, with sunny days practically all year round. The thermal amplitudes are wide within the semi-arid mountain climate that characterizes the area. Another characteristic is the Zonda wind, which is a warm, dry wind that comes from the west, and generally occurs in the fall and spring seasons.

La Provincia limita al oeste con Chile, siendo la Cordillera de los Andes la frontera natural; al sur con la provincia de Mendoza, al norte y este con La Rioja y al sureste con San Luis.

The Province neighbors Chile to the west, being the Cordillera de los Andes the natural border; it also borders the Provinces of Mendoza to the south , La Rioja to the north and east, and San Luis to the southeast.

Además, San Juan se comunica con Chile por medio del Paso Internacional Agua Negra, que permite el tránsito desde la localidad de Las Flores (Departamento Iglesia) hacia la ciudad chilena de Huanta (Provincia de Elqui, Región de Coquimbo). Debido a su altura, se encuentra sólo abierto en temporada estival.

In addition, San Juan communicates with Chile through the Paso Internacional de Agua Negra, which allows transit from the town of Las Flores (Iglesia Department) to the Chilean city of Huanta (Elqui Province, Coquimbo Region). Due to its height, it is only open during the summer season.

Cuenta con un aeropuerto, el Domingo Faustino Sarmiento (también conocido como Aeropuerto de Las Chacritas), ubicado a 15 km. al sureste del centro de la ciudad de San Juan, que centraliza la comunicación aérea.

It has an airport, Domingo Faustino Sarmiento (also known as Las Chacritas Airport), located 15 km to the southeast of the center of the city of San Juan, which centralizes air communication.

Respecto a la conectividad terrestre puede darse a través de las siguientes rutas: Ruta Nacional 20, 40, 141, 142, 149, 150 y 153.

Durante el año 2018 el valor agregado bruto total de la Provincia de San Juan ascendió a $175.447 millones (en dólares 6.241 millones), y para ese mismo periodo, Argentina tuvo un PBI de $12.348 millones (en dólares 439.272 millones).

During 2018, the total gross added value of the Province of San Juan amounted to $175,447 million (in dollars 6,241 million), and for that same period, Argentina had a GDP of $12,348 million (in dollars 439,272 million).

La principal actividad de la provincia es la agrícola, donde se destaca

De las dos primeras actividades, principalmente, se desprende un complejo agroindustrial con la elaboración de vino y grandes volúmenes de aceite de oliva.

Además de la actividad agrícola en los oasis, también se destaca una creciente e importante actividad minera.

En lo que respecta al turismo, los atractivos internacionales más importantes son el montañismo, con el cerro Mercedario, y desde el punto de vista científico, Ischigualasto, un importante yacimiento paleontológico de extrañas geoformas que data del periodo triásico.

Regarding tourism, the most important international attractions are mountaineering, with the Mercedario hill, and from the scientific point of view, Ischigualasto, an important paleontological site of strange geoforms dating from the Triassic period.

El turismo enológico ha crecido considerablemente en los últimos años; también los deportes aventura como el rafting y el carrovelismo, practicado este último en un lugar conocido como la Pampa del Leoncito, entre otros. San Juan también es bastante conocido por el turismo religioso, con el muy visitado Oratorio de la Difunta Correa.

Enotourism, also known as Wine tourism, has grown/ has been growing considerably in recent years, as well as adventure sports such as rafting and land sailing, the latter being practiced in a place known as the Pampa del Leoncito, among others. San Juan is also well known for religious tourism, with the much-visited oratory “Oratorio de la Difunta Correa”.

La ciudad cuenta con diversos sitios de turismo cultural, destacándose el Museo Provincial de Bellas Artes Franklin Rawson, que cuenta con exposiciones permanentes de su valiosa colección e itinerantes en las que participan artistas sanjuaninos y de todo el país. Otro importante atractivo histórico es la Casa Natal de Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, donde se conservan testimonios concretos de la vida del prócer y su familia. También se conserva con su mobiliario original, la celda del Convento de los Dominicos donde descansó el General José de San Martín en su última visita a la provincia.

The city has various cultural tourism sites, highlighting the Franklin Rawson Provincial Museum of Fine Arts, which has permanent exhibitions of its valuable collection and traveling exhibitions in which artists from San Juan and from all over the country participate. Another important historical attraction is the Birthplace of Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, where real testimonies of the life of the great Argentinean leader and his family are preserved. San Juan also preserves, with its original furniture, the cell of the Dominican Convent where General José de San Martín rested on his last visit to the province.

Dentro del turismo cultural también encontramos el Teatro Sarmiento, el teatro del Bicentenario y el Auditórium Juan Victoria que posee un diseño impactante y una acústica acorde a las mejores salas del mundo.

Within cultural tourism we also find the Sarmiento Theater, the Bicentenario Theater and the Juan Victoria Auditorium, which has an impressive design and acoustics consistent with the best venues in the world.

Además, durante todo el año, se desarrollan importantes competencias deportivas, para lo cual la provincia cuenta con infraestructuras modernas como el Estadio San Juan del Bicentenario, los autódromos el Zonda y Villicum, y el velódromo Cubierto de San Juan.

In addition, throughout the year, important sports competitions are held, for which the province has modern infrastructures such as the San Juan del Bicentenario Stadium, the Zonda and Villicum racetracks, and the San Juan indoor velodrome.

Nature tourism

Respecto a la vida en la naturaleza se pueden realizar actividades de esparcimiento en balnearios y camping del Dique de Ullum y en Paradores del Dique Punta Negra.

Regarding life in nature, you can carry out recreational activities in spas and camping sites on the Ullum Dam and on the Punta Negra Dam.

Para los más aventureros se puede realizar actividades náuticas como la navegación a vela, paseos en lanchas, kayak, kitesurf, windsurf, stand up paddle, wakeboard, esquí acuático, pesca y buceo.

For the more adventurous, you can do nautical activities such as sailing, boat rides, kayaking, kitesurfing, windsurfing, stand up paddle, wakeboarding, water skiing, fishing and diving.

Las montañas también brindan su atractivo ya que invitan a la acción para realizar senderismo, trekking, mountain bike, y escalada deportiva o en muro.

The mountains also offer their attraction inviting people for hiking, trekking, mountain biking, and sport or wall climbing.

Dentro de las actividades aéreas esta la opción de hacer tirolesa cruzando el Río San Juan y parapente desde el Cerro Tres Marías o las Sierras Azules.

Among the aerial activities there is the option of zip-lining across the San Juan River and paragliding from Cerro Tres Marías or the Sierras Azules.

Mining

La minería se ha convertido en una de las actividades principales de la provincia. Entre los principales minerales metalíferos, encontramos bismuto, berilo, cobre, hierro, manganeso, antimonio, oro, zinc, plata, plomo, tantalio, tungsteno, uranio, molibdeno, wolframita, etc.

Mining has become one of the main activities of the province. Among the main metallic minerals, we find bismuth, beryl, copper, iron, manganese, antimony, gold, zinc, silver, lead, tantalum, tungsten, uranium, molybdenum, wolframite, etc.

En lo que respecta a los minerales no metalíferos encontramos arcillas, bentonita, cuarzo, feldespatos, micas, dolomitas, esquistos, granitos, grafito, sulfato de sodio, sulfato de magnesio, mármol, talco, yeso, áridos, caliza, calcita, caolín, diatomeas y travertinos.

Regarding non-metallic minerals we find clay, bentonite, quartz, feldspars, micas, dolomites, schists, granites, graphite, sodium sulfate, magnesium sulfate, marble, talc, gypsum, aggregates, limestone, calcite, kaolin, diatoms and travertines.

Esta actividad se ha convertido en pilar de la reconversión de la matriz productiva y del empleo, aportando inversiones, incorporación de tecnología y desarrollo de la cadena de proveedores mineros.

This activity has become one of the greatest supports of the reconversion of the productive matrix and employment, contributing with investments, addition and updating technology and development of the chain of mining suppliers.

Respecto a la Agricultura, Ganadería y Agroindustrias, San Juan cuenta con una superficie cultivada de 105.000 hectáreas, de las cuales, el 85% se encuentra bajo riego y el 15% restante es regado con aguas subterráneas.

Regarding Agriculture, Livestock and Agro-industries, San Juan has a cultivated area of 105,000 hectares, of which 85% is under irrigation and the remaining 15% is irrigated with groundwater.

Considerando las hectáreas cultivadas de cada producto, se puede establecer la siguiente división:

• Vitivinicultura: la superficie cultivada con viñedos es de aproximadamente 47.530 ha; que representan el 21% del total nacional.
• Olivicultura: 19.000 hectáreas cultivadas, con un rendimiento promedio de 18 tn/ha.
• Frutos secos: 1.000 has que representan el 96% de la producción nacional. Cabe destacar que además cuenta con una importante producción de nueces y almendras.
• Tomate: 2.300 hectáreas cultivadas de las cuales 2.000 están cultivadas con variedades de tomate para industria y 300 para consumo en fresco.
